Riera signs record four-year Olympiakos deal

Liverpool’s Spanish winger Albert Riera completed his Greek record move to Olympiakos on Friday when he signed a four-year contract.

It is the biggest transaction ever in the Greek Super League with Olympiakos paying Liverpool five million euros.

“I will work hard to write history with Olympiakos,” said 28-year-old Riera.

The former Espanyol and Bordeaux winger will receive a total of seven million euros for the duration of his contract, a figure which does not include bonuses.

“It was an easy choice for me to make and I am happy to be here. I did not expect such a big turnout at the airport. It was a pleasant surprise,” Riera said about the welcome from some 3,000 Olympiakos supporters at the airport on Thursday.

“I believe Olympiakos is the best team in Greece and one of the best in Europe. I have missed some practice sessions because of the negotiations, but I should be ready to play in about a week,” Riera said.

Riera said his younger brother Sito, who plays for Athens club Panionios, had explained certain things about playing in Greece.

“He told me about the friendly supporters and the atmosphere during the derbies. It is a pleasure to play in front of such crowds and this is one of the reasons I came here,” Riera said.
