Rob Styles makes serious error? Surely not!

I haven’t seen the Newcastle v Manchester City game from last night. It ended 2-2 which represented a pretty good performance by Newcastle, now unbeaten in two under interim manager Joe Kinnear, particularly when they went 1-0 down and down to ten men in the thirteenth minute.

What must have made it even more difficult to take was the fact that by all accounts it was another poor decision by Rob Styles.

As I say, I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment directly on this incident, but reports suggest that Newcastle’s Habib Beye clearly got the ball before making contact with Robinho.

Mr Styles has a long and inauspicious record of really terrible penalty decisions. In fact, it has gone beyond a joke. If this decision was as bad as reported, then surely enough is enough and Mr Styles should receive the appropriate ban.

Getting to the ball fist means nothing according to the laws of the game. A foul is a foul on or off the ball…
Yes, he touched the ball but he also clearly fouled the player; hence it must be a penalty (since it was in the box). With the foul he denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity, so it has to be a red card. Hence penalty and a red card.
Rob Styles got it right (for once).
