Salihamidzic the reason why Bayern’s Werner swoop fell through

Bayern Munich were linked with a move for Timo Werner of RB Leipzig for a long time as the Bundesliga champions continue their search for a long-term successor for Robert Lewandowski. However, when Werner signed a new four-year deal with his current club towards the end of the summer transfer window, it was, naturally, clear that the move wasn’t happening.

Fresh reports have come up in the German media, offering an explanation for such a development. Sport Bild have relayed a claim by the Suddeutsche Zeitung that it was actually Hasan Salihamidzic who was against bringing the 24-year-old striker to the Allianz Arena. The Bavarian club’s sporting director gradually persuaded executive board chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge to cool the interest, which further broadened the gap between them and Werner’s representative, Karl-Heinz Forster.

The player was linked with Real Madrid and Liverpool as well for a while.

The situation was resolved when Werner put pen to paper on a new deal which is now set to keep him at the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig until 2023.
