Simeone to Inter rumours ´absolutely fake news´, says Marotta

Inter president Giuseppe Marotta has described reports that they are in talks to appoint Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone for next season as “fake news.”

The Nerazzurri look destined to win the Scudetto for the 21st time this campaign, having built a 10-point lead over city rivals AC Milan with 12 games remaining in Serie A.

However, reports on Monday suggested Cristian Chivu’s reign could be brought to a halt after just a year, with long-serving Atleti boss Simeone touted as a possible replacement.

But ahead of the second leg of Inter’s Champions League play-off tie against Bodo/Glimt on Tuesday, Marotta shut down those rumours.

“It’s absolutely fake news, it’s not even worth talking about. We are extraordinarily happy with Chivu,” Marotta told Sky Sport Italia.

“Luck is a part of football, but the coach is proving himself worthy of the Inter job.”

Simeone has overseen 779 matches with Atleti since joining the club in December 2011, registering 461 wins (59%), 170 draws and 148 defeats.

Los Colchoneros have scored 1,333 goals and conceded 661 under the Argentine, who has led them to LaLiga titles in 2013-14 and 2020-21, the Copa del Rey in 2012-13 and Europa League glory in 2011-12 and 2017-18, as well as two Champions League runner-up finishes.
