Dutch international midfielder Wesley Sneijder is set to return to play for Spanish champions Real Madrid after recovering from a left knee injury, the club announced on Friday.

The 24-year-old injured his knee two months ago in a friendly against English Premiership side Arsenal but he came through training with his team-mates safely on Friday and is expected to make his competitive return on October 5 against Espanyol at the Bernabeu.

Sneijder, who scored nine goals in Real's march to the title last term in his first season at the club after leaving Ajax, had been expected to be out for three months but opted to undergo intensive orthopaedic treatment.
