Time for change at Arsenal?

Time for change

I have a huge amount of respect for Arsene Wenger and as an English football fan I am very grateful for what he has brought to the game in this country. In the days before Wenger , English football was best known for playing the long ball game, drinking copious amounts of beer and living on a diet of takeaway food. Whilst some of that image still remains, Wenger has played a huge part in almost eliminating it entirely.

Joy

In his early days at Arsenal he transformed the club from top to bottom and brought a brand of football to Highbury and the Emirates, that was new to the English football fan and a joy to watch. Not only was it all those things, it was also highly effective and successful.

When he arrived at Highbury back in 1996 he was something of an unknown and regarded as a surprise choice for the job. Within ten years he had led Arsenal to three Premier League titles, four FA Cup triumphs as well as second place finishes in five Premier League campaigns, an FA Cup and the Champions League. Amongst that great record in 2003-04 his side won the title without losing a single game.

All of this was achieved with minimal spending on players compared to the other top clubs and at the same time as moving into a new ground.

Awards

As a manager Arsene Wenger has won too many awards to list in this article. They include being given the OBE and induction to the English football hall of fame.

Despite that fantastic record outlined above, the fact remains that the last time Arsenal won anything significant, or even finished runners up in anything was back in 2006.

Arsenal fans have been very patient with Wenger since 2006 as they should have been after what he achieved. He has set about creating a brand of football at the club that in many ways is the envy of all the others. Their slick passing and moving is a testament to the way most of us like to see the game played. He has done it by using young players who he has continually promised will deliver trophies in due course.

Patience

The problem is that they do not actually look any closer to winning anything than they have done since 2006 and the patience of the fans is beginning to wear a little thin.

Home Premier League defeats to West Brom and Newcastle were bad enough but the second half capitulation at home to hated neighbours Tottenham was about as bad as it gets. After the game Wenger insisted that he had been happy with the performance and couldn’t understand how they had lost the game. That statement must have sent shudders down the spine of many Arsenal fans.

The fans know that Arsenal are missing steel in their side. They need a world class goalkeeper and a new centre-back. They also need a goalscorer and someone who can win the ball. They also need to shoot occasionally rather than trying to create the perfect goal. All of those things are obvious to everyone, it seems, other than Wenger himself.

Type

After Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at Braga on Tuesday, Wenger reverted to type and criticised the officials and the tackling of the opponents. I’m afraid this will just not wash anymore.

I respect Arsene Wenger and I enjoy watching Arsenal play football, but I think the time may have come for him to either accept that his approach and philosophy may have to change a little or for him to move on and let someone else try to take this group of players onto the next level.

What do Arsenal fans think?

For i think that Arsenal should stop saying that there always young and what Wenger should do is to buy top players leaving aside buying young players.

I think its high time for the Arsenal board of directors to look into this such that they can inject in money to buy players with exprience.

And if they do that thats when they will be able to overcome chelsea and Man utd.

I share the same sentiments, AW has lost the plot but maybe he is not under any pressure to deliver like Mancini, Ancelloti, etc, and his mandate is maybe to turn unkown players to superstars. The reason I’m saying this is because every season from 2006, Arsenal has been selling their top players, think Hleb, Viera, Lauren, Henry, Ljungberg, Pires, Silvestre, Sendeross, Diarra, Flamini, Lehman, Gilberto, Gallas, Cole, Adebayor, Toure. Most of the transferred players were regulars for their respective national teams, these days even the captain of the team is a benchwarmer at Ole. Everytime we are playing against Man Utd, Chelsea, Liverpool and even Spurs, we know that Arsenal is going to loose and it is going to be the same old comment, the Refree this and that, the pitch did not suite our style of play. Even yesterday the coach mentioned that he is not going for any big name signings during the January transfer window period, I am so hurting.

Today’s football world is a business entity far away from entertainment. I wonder why fans want to die for football clubs that worth trillions of dollars. Football earn huge amount of money and live in opulence ways of life.

For Arsenal and trophies, every club have their own season and time. We all know how Liverpool, Real Madrib and Ajax was controlling the UCL but today it is Barcelona and Manchester United that are there. Manchester United has also stayed for almost 5 years without wining a trohpy. Either trophy or no trophy: We Arsenal Fans will stick to our club. We will stay with them until when things get better

i definitely agree with what you want to say. i have a different approach. now that arsenal has grown into this very famous football club. it needs a rewamp with new stars and professionals from round the globe who dont need a lot of training or coaching
( chamakh ) similar to something that happened at city, but still very minimal compared to the spending, just to get the right players at the right places and win trophies. if you actually try to really understand what evra said about arsenal., its the absolute truth, they can win games , play exciting football even be on top of the table for a while or so, but trophies have long been forgotten. we gunners need finance and spendings to get the right players now., else i see a slow and utter downfall of the team.

In terms of change, Wenger has a foothold on the team like SFA. He will move when he wants coz he is one of the key shareholders, he had a hand in designing the Emirates and he saved them millions during the transition to the Emirates.

Wenger and SFA share a lot of similarities, the only difference is that UTD are more consistent and if they buy big, they buy impactful players.

Maybe Arsenal should spend more but on fewer players and make it a priority to buy impact players.

i think that the major problem for arsenal is the fact that you have young players with no one to look up to, to set an example for or show the young players what needs to be done to win a title.

for example lets say if you put some with the likes of dennis bergkamp on the pitch how much does that change? someone who truely knew the game. who could shoot and pass combine that with the speed of Walcott there is game changer right there.

its simple arsenal just need some experienced players to push the young players in the right direction.

    – obviously a goalie is needed. i dont schwarez is the best keeper a team like arsenal should get i think this is the position you should spend whatever it takes to get the best.

    – loud encouraging central defender one who is a leader at the back. this position is hard and i have thought long and hard about it and if im wrong im sorry but i think that Pique or Mertesacker. they give that height advantage and compliment that with someone with some speed and thats a pretty hard defence to break through

    – true midfielder i personaly think rosicky is a far better central mid then cesc, rosicky can at least score and from distance. dont get me wrong cesc is great but he cares more about barc then arsenal. plus i heard that there might be possibility that Pirlo might be avaiable soon there is a wealth of experience right there.

    – goal scorer. i have been a fan of RVP since he came to arsenal but you cant have you best forward injured more then on the pitch you cant win anything. i hear carlos Teves isnt happy at man city. that would be great he gives 100% all the time a great role model for the youngsters

for more than 4 years already, it’s the same old song sung by Arsene, MY TEAM IS YOUNG, WE NEED TIME TO DEVELOP. Just look at Jose at Madrid, yes, it’s too early in the season, but Jose managed to make a solid team out of youngsters from Germany and Argentina, Ozil and Di Maria to be specific. I agree that Wenger has made his squad soft, the mentally of Arsenal is always WE’RE A YOUNG TEAM THAT IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION. It’s time for Arsene to harden up that mentally and turn it into a WE’RE YOUNG, WE’RE HUNGRY AND WE CAN WITH EVERYTHING mentally.

I know what I’m about to say is enough for most Gunners to chase me down the allay with daggers drawn for a kill. Sometimes the truth hurts but I think the world of football has moved on, and left AW behind. No need to call a spade a big spoon.

Not until we realise this bitter truth and take remedial action there will be no hope at end of the tunnel of despair.

    Here’s what a Chelsea fan thinks…

and no offense to anyone (as I hear the guns being drawn)…

Wenger is a brilliant coach…but he is stubborn, or someone else running the club is stubborn. Gunners need to keep up with the changes in this sport…spend money and buy some superstars instead of trying to turn everyone in to one b/c not everyone can be a superstar! You probably have the most financially sound club in the world…you can afford to spend. It’s ok to be the 5th or 6th most financially sound club. I’m not saying to indulge in to debt, but give the youngsters some game changing players that can rally the club and that the youngsters can get behind…

Gunners lack a true leader at this point. Cesc doesn’t cut it cuz everyone knows his mind is on Barca…

Wenger is not the problem…his style of play will kill teams if his young-guns have the confidence to do it…

Every team needs a lethal player or two…AW should really consider buying a couple…

Maybe the strategy of Arsenal & the spirit of team are the problem. Maybe Arsenal should hire a pshycologic to make better spirit & mentality.

Fantastic statement by dele. The players are there, the problem is that Arsene Wenger does not play aggressive players in their positions. Secondly, if you rely on a good player who is not fully fit, you would not achieve good results. The other good ones are there, put them in the appropriate positions and win matches. Honestly I would prefer a solid, rugged young player like JET (Jay Emmanuel Thomas) to play up front for the senior team and I bet he will score goals. JET has been playing and scoring wonderfully in the young gunners team.

The fact is wenger makes average players look good. Honestly cesc is considered the best at arsenal but is he? Can we honestly say that cesc is better than ronaldo, xavi, iniesta, gerrad, lampard, messi, rosicky. Yes rosicky a proven midfielder both at club and international level being wated at the wings bcos of cesc. What happened to all those fantastic strike rosicky makes from long range at the international and club level before he moved to arsenal. Can we compare song, with makele, macherano, senna, can we compare rvp with torres, eto, ronaldo, messi, can we honetsly compare our goalkeepers with vander sar, cassilas, reina, can we compare our defenders with those even in the lower league. Lets face it the strongest team arsenal can field cannot win the champions league against a mourinho led real madrid. What do we need then. Wenger is soft hearted and hardly wants to hurt his players but keeping sentiments aside i believe this. 1, bentdner is not needed at the emirates vela makes a better striker but needs to lose weiht. 2, Song should learn to hold his ground and stop his venturing forward. 3, rosicky should be in the centre of the pack. 4, we do not need an overhaull of the team all that is required is a true finisher not an always injured rvp.we won the league under wenger without losing a game. That is enough proof that we have a sound manager with the wrong players.

I get what you are saying. Its gut wrenching to see your team go from 2-0 up to 3-2 down on home soil and then beaten 2-0 by an unknown such as Braga but i think the players are at fault. These players do not seem to realise what an honour it is to play for the red and white. They are not fully focused on the games at hand, they become lazy, complacent and loose focus. Its time Wenger was hard on them, either give 100% or drop them and find someone else who will. But all is not lost we just need a few players to complete the team. Namely a new Central defender, Defensive midfielder, goalkeeper and a winger or stiker

W always blame the officials/referree, why??? i don’t understand why not they accept our weakness(him fucken philosophy). All Arsenal players are psychologically poor;haven’t confidence and have low self esteem. Have you seen Man united player and their coach they had full confidence!! I’m realy disappointing with wenger philosophy.
