Tottenham are believed to have rejected a world-record bid from Real Madrid for Gareth Bale
According to Daily Mail and other newspapers, Tottenham are believed to have rejected a world record bid for Welsh superstar Gareth Bale, depending on which newspaper you read the bid was between £82million and £86million.
Chairman Daniel Levy appears determined to keep Bale at White Hart Lane and looks set to reject all bids for Tottenham’s star player.
Upset
The player himself is believed to be upset by the bid being rejected and the fact that Levy would not even consider the bid.
It seems that Bale now has his heart set on moving to the Bernabeu to play with likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Mesut Ozil.
Real Madrid is without a doubt one of the biggest clubs in the world, if not the biggest. They have a massive support and are the most successful club in the history of European football. I mean which player would not be tempted by playing for such a successful and glamorous club.
It is unclear whether Bale will hand in a transfer request, but as the Mail reveals he has not yet sat down with Tottenham to discuss a new contract, as previous thought. Bale wants to play football at the highest level and who could blame him for that?
Real Madrid will offer him better chances of silverware, bigger wages, and a chance to play in the Champions League.
Shrewd
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is one of the shrewdest business minds in the game. He is known for his ruthless attitude when it comes to business. If Spurs can make money, or even avoid spending money, Levy will find a way.
That business savvy has kept Tottenham on a relatively even financial keel in recent years. They may not have the financial resources of Chelsea or Manchester City, but they are financially comfortable.
Price
I think there are very few people that would argue about Gareth Bale being a fantastic player. Every player has his price though. Even Manchester United had to accept the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo was leaving for Real Madrid in 2009 and bank the £80million transfer fee.
A world-record fee must be a tempting prospect for the people that control the purse strings at White Hart Lane. Surely even Daniel Levy’s head must been turned by those sorts of figures.
Ambition
Gareth Bale has become the talisman for Tottenham. The player that the fans, team and manager expects to go out onto the pitch and make match winning contributions. His sale may appear as a lack of ambition from Spurs, who are looking to break into the top four of the Premier League next season.
When the Welshman was injured towards the end of last season, Spurs challenge for a Champions League spot started to look very shaky. In the end, they were beaten to fourth spot by arch-rivals Arsenal.
Maybe Daniel Levy sees rejecting bids for Gareth Bale as a signal of the clubs ambition to be real challengers next season, or maybe the Spurs chairman is just trying to squeeze an extra couple of million out of Real Madrid.
Either way it seems that he is the man standing in the way of Gareth Bale moving to the Spanish capital and does not look like budging anytime soon.
Money
Tottenham have already strengthened their squad this summer with the signings of Brazilian international Paulinho and Belgium international Nacer Chadli. However, with £80million Spurs would be bring in more quality players.
Tottenham would have to face the fact that every selling club would know that they had £80million burning a hole in their pocket though. Every player would then have a few million extra added on to his prospective fee, because Tottenham would be so cash-rich.
Levy would find a way round this though and he would use all his negotiations skills to get the best deal for Spurs.
The Tottenham squad definitely needs strengthening if they are to challenge the established order in the Premier League. It is a major quandary for Tottenham’s hierarchy, whether to stick or twist. It seems that they do not intend to twist at this moment in time.
Inevitable
It now almost seems inevitable that Gareth Bale will leave Tottenham, if not this summer then next. Spurs are not at the level that Bale wants to be at just yet and it will most likely cost the north London side their best player.
It would be a shame for Tottenham and the Premier League to lose such a good to player, but it now seems that Bale wants the move. The Wales international may be saying goodbye to Tottenham and Hola to Real Madrid in the future.
