Feyenoord player Giovanni van Bronckhorst is the new captain of the Dutch national team, succeeding goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar.

Van Bronckhorst made his international debut in 1996 and earned 81 caps since. The defender slash midfielder is familiar with current manager Bert van Marwijk, as the two worked together at Feyenoord Rotterdam.

“I’ve seen Van Bronckhorst as captain at Feyenoord. He did fine then, and I think this’ll be the case with the Dutch team as well,” said Van Marwijk.

Van Bronckhorst has represented many teams during his sixteen year old career, with his years at Glasgow Ranfers, Arsenal and Barcelona as highlights before returning to Feyenoord last year.
