Why Alfredo Morelos Is More Than Ready To Leave Rangers

When football fans think about the Scottish Premier League, Celtic and Rangers immediately come to mind. But if we think about players in the SPL that could fit in a more competitive environment, the first name that regularly comes to mind is the one of Alfredo Morelos. The Colombian striker currently plays for Rangers, but he’s taken the league by storm ever since he arrived to Ibrox. But in order to understand the Morelos phenomenon, we need to take a look back. First, let’s see what he’s done in other clubs too. After all, his impressive form isn’t something that came out of nowhere.

The first step: HJK Helsinki

Before joining Rangers, Morelos was coming off two impressive years playing for HJK Helsinki. The Colombian netted 27 goals in 42 Veikkausliga appearances, while adding 15 goals in 13 domestic cup matches, and four goals in six UEFA Europa League outings.

Adding it all up, Morelos registered the impressive tally of 46 goals in 61 matches across all competitions for Helsinki. Those performances granted him a move to the Ibrox side. They needed a proven, young striker and Morelos checked all the boxes.

Present and future: Rangers

Undoubtedly, the Scottish Premier League represents a tougher competition in comparison to the Veikkausliga. As such, many pundits believed the Colombian would require an adjustment period to settle in Scotland… but that wasn’t the case. In his first season with Rangers, Morelos finished with 14 goals in 35 Premiership appearances, tallying 18 total strikes in 43 appearances across all competitions.

The best was yet to come, though. In his second season and fully settled on Scotland, the Colombian striker is currently living the best form of his career. So far this season, the 22-year-old forward already has 16 goals in 25 Premiership appearances. Adding all competitions into the mix, Morelos has 28 goals in 42 total matches with roughly two months left in the season.

We only have to watch his performances in his last 10 outings to see just how good he’s been. Over that span across all competitions, Morelos has scored eight times, including netting four times in a Cup match against Kilmarnock last month.

Which teams have expressed interest in him?

With this kind of form, it’s natural to question what’s going to be the next move in his career.

Eintracht Frankfurt, Borussia Dortmund and Leicester City have all been linked with a move for Morelos. And while Steven Gerrard has strengthened the idea of the Colombian staying at the club next season, Rangers should be wise and sell him now while his value is at an all-time high.

Let’s think about it. Morelos has done it all in a lower-tier European league such as the Finnish Veikkausliga. And he’s now done it in a mid-level competition such as the Scottish Premier League. There are chances he could be even more dominant if he stays in the SPL for another year. But what if he gets inured? What if he gets into a dry spell? Several things can happen. And Rangers should do the smart thing and sell him while there are offers for him on the table.

Morelos’ numbers are the best proof to see that he is more than ready to take the next step in his career.
