Why should Hughton’s position at Newcastle be questioned?

Newcastle United boss Chris Hughton has been rumoured to be heading out of St James Park.

However a statement was released by the club last night stating that Hughton will renegotiate his contract at the end of the year.

The club statement read: “Chris is our manager and will remain our manager, and it is our intention to re-negotiate his contract at the end of the year.”

Strange

Chris Hughton has done a fantastic job at Newcastle. Yet rumours in the North-East have been rift that he would leave the club this week.

Some bookmakers had even stopped taking bets on him leaving. I find it strange that these rumours have spread so much considering the sterling job he has done at St James Park.

Assistant

Hughton assistant manager Colin Calderwood has recently left the club to take the reins of Scottish Premier League side Hibernian. There was speculation that Hughton was unhappy that he wasn’t able to appoint a new assistant.

However those reports seem erroneous as the boss seems to be taking his time over a decision. The current favourite is former-Chelsea assistant Steve Clarke to become Hughton’s number two.

Stability

Hughton has brought stability to the Magpies. The club has been in upheaval for years and years. The changes of management never helped the club establish a healthy structure. The clubs fans have demanded instant success and Newcastle boards of the past have caved to the fans pressure to sack managers and also hire managers.

Hughton managed to resurrect the club after they were relegated from the Premier League. He originally only took over as caretaker but he did such a good job that he was rewarded with the job on a permanent-basis.

He had to rebuild after half of the players in the squad left the club following relegation. He never moaned or whinged about the situation he just got on with the job. Newcastle fans should be pleased that they have a steady hand on the rudder of the club.

Priorities

Hughton has already stated that the priority for the Magpies this season is staying in the Premier League. They have made a decent start to the season and currently lie in midtable in the English top flight.

Newcastle are midtable in the Premier League because of Hughton’s managerial skills. The former-Tottenham star was a coach for a long time and it seems he has taken his chance to be number one with both hands.

By all accounts he is a quiet guy who just gets his head down and does his job. This is in contrast to previous Newcastle managers   and it must be a breath of fresh air for Geordie fans.

Humble

I have to admit I wrote an article earlier this season saying that I didn’t think Newcastle’s defence was strong enough to keep them up. I have to admit I may be wrong and might have to eat humble pie at the end of the season.

I would like Newcastle to stay up as Chris Hughton is the sort of likeable guy that deserves to achieve success.

Will Newcastle United stay up this season?

Giving the lengths he has gone to bring this club back to the top flight, and with the top flight comes top TV money, this sounds like somebody’s agent is kicking up rumours to get his client a bigger slice of the pie.

Why would a manager who has come this far want to quit now? It doesn’t make sense… unless he wasnt’ being rewarded for his efforts.

I suspect that with all that TV money floating around at Newcastle now there are probably a few more people looking for an exit that we’ll soon hear about…
