Will Jose Enrique be the last arrival at Anfield this summer?

Liverpool have agreed a fee in the region of £6million to sign Newcastle left-back Jose Enrique.

The Spaniard could prove a steal at that sort of price considering the sort of prices English clubs have been paying for other players.

Problem

The left-back position has proved something of a problem position for Liverpool in the last few years.

Many players have attempted to fill the role but have never looked convincing. Jose Enrique should definitely be the answer to the problem position.

Spending

Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish has been on a massive spending spree this summer bringing in midfielders Charlie Adam, Stewart Downing and Jordan Henderson. The trio of midfielders cost just under £50million.

However some Liverpool fans feel that the Reds squad isn’t quite complete just yet and that the club needs to strengthen even further.

Defender

One of the positions that Liverpool may need to strengthen is centre-back. Jamie Carragher has been a superb servant to the club but is now starting to look his age. Martin Skrtel isn’t the best defender the world either.

Then there is Daniel Agger. I would say the Dane is probably the most stylish centre-back the Reds have in their squad. Unfortunately he has became increasingly injury-prone in the previous few seasons and has struggled to play much first team football.

We move on to Greek centre-back Sotirios Krygiakos. The 32 year-old Greek international is just not good enough for the English top flight. He cannot be considered for a regular place in Liverpool’s first team. Must only be considered as a last resort.

Liverpool have been linked with a number of central defenders since the transfer window opened. The most recent one is Liverpool-born Birmingham centre-back Scott Dann. The 24 year-old looks set to leave St Andrews after the club were relegated from the Premier League.

Liverpool face competition from Arsenal for the highly-rated defender with the Gunners believed to be holding talks with Dann’s agent. Another option would be Bolton’s Gary Cahill but the Trotters rate him in the £17million bracket and Dalglish has been told he needs to sell to buy from now on.

Striker

Liverpool would probably benefit from signing another striker. They have a good first choice pair in Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll but there is little quality backup in the Liverpool squad. The usual backup is French striker David N’Gog.

The youngster has impressed in flashes but is not yet considered consistent enough to be a Premier League player. Spaniard Daniel Pacheco could have more involvement in the first team next season after spending last season out on-loan. The youngster is highly-rated but like N’Gog isn’t considered to be ready for regular Premier League football.

Kenny Dalglish has also got the option of playing Dutchman Dirk Kuyt up front. However the Holland international is now considered more of a midfielder than a striker.

Midfielders

At least the Anfield legend doesn’t have to worry about his midfield. Thanks to his summer spending spree the club now look overstocked in midfielder. With Dalglish told to sell to buy before buying further new recruits Dalglish may look to get rid of some of his midfielders.

Portuguese midfielder Raul Meireles has been linked with a move away this summer. However the 28 year-old was outstanding in second half of last season. It would be a strange move to sell him after such an outstanding spell of form.

More likely is the departure of Italian midfield playmaker Alberto Aquilani. The Italian international was loaned out to Juventus last season with a view to a permanent move. The Old Lady didn’t take up the option of making the transfer permanent and he’s now back at Anfield.

According to recent reports he could be heading back to play in Serie A with Fiorentina. Italian champions AC Milan have also shown an interest in the player.

Fourth

With the new signings coming in next seasons aim for Liverpool has to be the Champions League spots. Some more optimistic fans are claiming the Reds can challenge for the title. Unfortunately I believe that’s a target for a few years down the line.

A place in the top four of the Premier League next season will be a good foundation to build the future of the club on. Then maybe Kenny Dalglish can return the club to its former glories.

Will Liverpool sign anymore players in this transfer window?

If they don’t get a center back I think this transfer window can definitely be considered a failure. Having Gerrard, Meireles, Henderson, Lucas, Adam, & Spearing all fighting for those central midfielder spots will do nothing but ruin team chemistry, especially if they’re constantly shifting who’s in.

i agree David. for liverpool to win the title this year would be nothing short of a miracle. They’re quality up front will have to make up for potential defensive deficiencies. on the plus side, this could make liverpool games very entertaining this season
