Championship: Ipswich go back up to second, Oxford relegated to League One

Ipswich Town moved back up to second in the Championship after a 0-0 draw with West Brom, who secured their place in the league with the point.

Millwall temporarily occupied the automatic promotion spot on Friday after a stalemate with Leicester, but the Tractor Boys did just enough to leapfrog their rivals.

The best chance of the game fell late on to George Hirst, but he somehow failed to hit the target from inside the six-yard box as West Brom, who were handed a points deduction during the week, maintain their place in the Championship for another season.

Middlesbrough did, however, move within a point of Ipswich, who still have a game in hand, after thrashing Watford 5-1 at Riverside Stadium.

Morgan Whittaker scored either side of assisting David Strelec, while Tommy Conway’s second-half brace rendered James Abankwah’s goal for the Hornets a consolation.

West Brom’s draw meant Oxford United were relegated, despite the latter defeating Sheffield Wednesday 4-1.

Will Lankshear starred for Matt Bloomfield’s side with two goals and an assist, while Wills Vaulks and Myles Peart-Harris also got on the scoresheet.

Hull City, meanwhile, missed the chance to move into the top six, losing 2-1 at Charlton Athletic, while Derby County moved one point behind sixth-placed Wrexham with a 3-2 win away to Queens Park Rangers.

Data Debrief: Walton the hero for Ipswich

In a season where Ipswich’s attackers have impressed, goalkeeper Christian Walton was the standout against West Brom after making six saves.

Overall, West Brom produced 1.25 expected goals (xG) from 12 shots compared to Ipswich’s 1.17 from 13 attempts, three of which were on target.

Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, have failed to win in their last 39 games in the Championship, their longest winless streak in the competition (since at least 2016-17).
