Arsenal have joined Manchester City in attempting to sign AZ Alkmaar playmaker Adam Maher, according reports in the UK.

The 18-year-old has appeared in every Eredivisie game so far this campaign after making his debut last season, and is now a key player for the club in either a central or attacking midfield role.

Tied to the club until the end of the 2014/15 campaign and with the title-chasing club not needing to sell players in the January transfer window, Maher will not be allowed to leave cheaply.

The Times claims he has already turned down an offer from English Premier League leaders Manchester City, where he would face a battle for regular match-time.

Of Moroccan descent, Maher may be set to stay with AZ to continue his progress.

AZ appear to have much to offer him in the near future, given they are sitting top of the Eredivisie and are still in the Europa League.
