Mike Williamson joins Wolves

Championship side Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the signing of defender Mike Williamson from Newcastle United.

The experienced stopper arrives on an emergency one-month loan, having failed to make a single Premier League appearance this season.

The 31-year-old had had an important role to play last season, making 31 Premier League outings, but he lost his place in the starting line-up upon the arrival of Chancel Mbemba.

Williamson did start the two League Cup matches this term, but he expressed his desire to play on regular basis and was eventually allowed to join Wolves on loan.

The Championship side have been far from impressive of late, losing last three league fixtures, while they have conceded 20 goals in 13 games.

Wolves manager Kenny Jackett will be hoping the arrival of the experienced Premier League centre-back will help patch up the leaky defence and get the team back in contention for promotion places.
