Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon are pondering a January bid for Zenit centre-back Luis Neto, Radio Renascenca has suggested.

The Lions lead the chase in Portuguese Primeira Liga and they are determined to stay there come end of the season.

Coach Jorge Jesus has identified the heart of defence as team’s weak spot and he has set out to recruit a high-quality stopper in the winter transfer window.

According to Radio Renascenca, the Lions have made Zenit star Luis Neto their number one target and already contacted the player’s representatives.

The 27-year-old is not exactly an undisputed starter for the Russian giants, but he did feature in 11 league games this season and will not be allowed to leave on the cheap.

Neto has made a total of 65 league appearances for Zenit since joining from Siena three and a half years ago, while he currently has 11 Portugal caps to his name.
