An injury-time winner from Mohamed Simakan extended Al-Nassr’s winning run in the Saudi Pro League to 11 matches following a narrow 1-0 win over NEOM on Saturday.

Jorge Jesus’ side were without Cristiano Ronaldo, who was missing due to a hamstring injury, and they needed a late intervention to move two points clear at the summit.

A low-key first half saw both sides struggle to create any clear-cut opportunities, though Sadio Mane did test visiting goalkeeper Luis Maximiano in the 18th minute.

Al-Nassr continued to push, but Joao Felix was unable to provide a telling touch, while Kingsley Coman also failed to test Maximiano as it ended all-square at the break.

NEOM created their best opening of the match in the 71st minute as the ball fell to Rayane Messi inside the area, but his lifted effort smacked against the crossbar.

The hosts responded by going close just three minutes later as Marcelo Brozovic also struck the post, with NEOM again striking the woodwork in search of the winner.

Said Benrahma was denied by the frame of the goal, but in the 95th minute, Simakan arrived at the back post to head Joao Felix’s teasing free-kick into the net to seal the win.

Data Debrief: Winning streak continues for title hopefuls

Al-Nassr have now won their last 11 matches in the league with an aggregate score of 27-4. They have not recorded a longer winning streak since a run of 13 between November 2013 and February 2014.

Furthermore, the home side have now kept four consecutive clean sheets at home, the first time they have achieved this feat in the same season.

Ronaldo’s absence was keenly felt, but the home side still created the greater expected goals (xG) total, managing a tally of 2.79 compared to their NEOM’s 0.74, while they also registered a total of 25 shots as the visitors only mustered six.
