Houssem Aouar led Al-Ittihad to a 2-0 win over Al-Taawoun, moving to within a point of their opponents in the Saudi Pro League table.

Aouar got a goal and an assist as Al-Ittihad bounced back from their last-gasp 4-3 loss to Neom last time out with an important win.

Al-Taawoun started on the front foot, with Roger Martinez seeing a first-time effort tipped just wide of the post before Mohammed Al Kuwaykibi’s tame effort was also kept out.

And against the run of play, Al-Ittihad found the breakthrough in the 19th minute. Aouar took a heavy first touch but still reacted quickest to poke the ball into the net, with Mailson unable to keep it out despite getting a hand to it.

Flavio and Martin Petkov both fired wide as Al-Taawoun searched for an equaliser on either side of the break before they were dealt another blow 52 minutes in.

Youssef En-Nesyri raced in behind to latch onto Aouar’s pass and slotted a low shot under Mailson, who again should have done better after getting a hand to the ball.

Martinez continued to push for Al-Taawoun, thumping a header against the corner of the goal frame with 20 minutes remaining, but they could not find a way back.

Data Debrief: Al-Ittihad stop the rot on the road

Al-Ittihad have now won their last four matches against Al-Taawoun in the Saudi Pro League, with their hosts providing a much-needed balm to their away struggles.

Sergio Conceicao’s side were winless in their last eight away matches in the league (D4 L4) before this game, and avoided three straight defeats in such games.

They had to be clinical under pressure; they scored with both of their shots on target (only having three overall), while holding off Al-Taawoun’s 19 attempts worth 1.68 expected goals (xG).
