Borussia Dortmund secured qualification for next season’s Champions League with a 4-0 rout of Freiburg at Signal Iduna Park.

Serhou Guirassy scored his 20th goal of the season in all competitions, while Maximilian Beier, Ramy Bensebaini and Fabio Silva were also on target for Niko Kovac’s side, who moved five points clear of RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga, and decisively, 10 clear of fifth-place Hoffenheim with three matches left to play.

Dortmund broke the deadlock after just eight minutes, with Beier latching onto Bensebaini’s long ball before beating Noah Atubolu in the Freiburg goal.

Julian Brandt’s lofted pass teed up Guirassy for the second goal in the 14th minute, while Bensebaini headed home Julian Ryerson’s corner to make it 3-0 just after the half-hour mark.

Freiburg thought they had pulled a goal back in the 54th minute through Lukas Kubler, but the midfielder was ruled offside following a VAR review.

Dortmund put the result beyond any doubt when Silva added a fourth with three minutes remaining, and their fans can be sure of Champions League football in 2026-27.

Data Debrief: Three is the magic number

Back to winning ways after successive defeats, Dortmund have now scored three or more goals in each of their last six Bundesliga home meetings with Freiburg.

Guirassy’s 15th league goal of the season made him the third African player to achieve the feat in three Bundesliga campaigns, after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Tony Yeboah.

As for Freiburg, they are now without a win in any of their last 20 top-flight matches against sides starting the day in the top three, while winning just one of their last 46 such away games.
