Bayern Munich recovered from a 3-0 deficit at half-time to defeat Mainz 4-3 at MEWA Arena.

Nicolas Jackson sparked the turnaround before second-half substitutes Michael Olise, Jamal Musiala and Harry Kane got the Bundesliga champions over the line on Saturday.

Vincent Kompany made big changes with Bayern’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain approaching, and they found themselves behind after 15 minutes when Dominik Kohr swept in from Kaishu Sano’s cross.

Paul Nebel doubled Mainz’s advantage just before the half-hour mark, scoring on the rebound after Jonas Urbig saved the initial attempt from Nadiem Amiri, while Sheraldo Becker scored on the stroke of half-time from a close-range rebound.

Olise and Kane were introduced for the second half, and the Frenchman played a role in Bayern’s first as he played Konrad Laimer into the box before the Austrian picked out Jackson with his cross.

The winger then reduced the deficit to just one goal in the 73rd minute, curling beyond the reach of Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Betz from the right side of the box, before Musiala poked in from close range after dancing through the Mainz defence.

Kane then secured all three points for Bayern in the 83rd minute, tapping in from inside the six-yard box after Betz parried Musiala’s cross straight into the path of the English striker.

Data Debrief: Bayern’s star prove their quality

Mainz became only the fourth team this millennium to lead Bayern by three goals at half-time in a Bundesliga match, but it was still not enough to defeat the Bavarian side.

It was a high-octane encounter, with Mainz producing 2.29 expected goals from 18 shots to Bayern’s 1.97 from 11 attempts, nine of which came during their second-half turnaround.

It was Kompany’s substitutes that made the difference, with Kane, Olise and Musiala all scoring crucial goals. Musiala registered the joint-most shots for Bayern (four) and attempted the joint-most dribbles (four) despite only coming on in the 57th minute.
