Vancouver Whitecaps v Colorado Rapids: Sorensen loving ´luxury´ attacking options for free-scoring h

Jesper Sorensen is loving having the “luxury” of so many players contributing to the Vancouver Whitecaps’ ferocious attack, which he hopes will deliver again when the Colorado Rapids visit in Sunday’s MLS clash.

The Caps have won their last three games to move onto 21 points, which leaves them second in the Western Conference and three behind the San Jose Earthquakes, who have played a match more.

Goals are seemingly coming from everywhere, too. Ten different players have already found the back of the net for Vancouver in MLS action this year.

Brian White (six goals), Thomas Muller (four goals) and Sebastian Berhalter (three goals) are their leading scorers, but Sorensen is relishing the wealth of attacking talent he can call upon.

“A lot of players get involved in chances. That shows we have good flow in our game, it’s not just up to a couple of players to make individual actions,” he said.

“We have a wide spread of players that can do different things to contribute to chances and goals. It’s a luxury thing that we have so many options, because it makes it so unpredictable for opponents to shut us down.

“I think that the fact we have so many players contributing already is a great thing because it gives confidence for the individual player that when they step on the pitch, they can make a difference.”

Vancouver are just the second team in MLS history to score at least 22 goals within the first eight games of a season.

The last team to accomplish that feat was the LA Galaxy, who won the Supporters’ Shield with a regular-season best 68 points in 1998.

Sorensen’s Caps will have another chance to impress on the goals front with the visit of Colorado, who are ninth in the West after a 0-0 draw with Los Angeles FC last time out.

The Rapids are winless in two games, but they did hammer the Houston Dynamo 6-2 in the match before that.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Vancouver Whitecaps – Sebastian Berhalter

Berhalter is tied in third place for goal contributions in MLS play this season with eight (three goals, five assists).

The midfielder is also tied for the league lead in expected assists (2.9) and is third in chances created (23). Berhalter is also just one goal or assist away from reaching 50 goal contributions across all competitions for the Caps (17 goals, 32 assists).

Colorado Rapids – Rafael Navarro

Rafael Navarro was on target when these two sides last met, a 3-0 win for Colorado at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park last season.

He has also struck a team-leading six times this season for the Rapids, who will desperately need his goals here.

MATCH PREDICTION – VANCOUVER WHITECAPS WIN

Although Colorado managed a 3-0 victory in the last meeting back in July 2025, the Caps are the heavy favourites for this encounter. Indeed, the Rapids have not won consecutive games against Vancouver since a pair of home victories during the 2015 season.

Colorado have also won only two of their last 18 regular-season away matches dating (D3 L13), conceding at least once in each match.

The only away matches where the Rapids held their opponent under two goals in that time were their two wins (2-1 at Minnesota United, 4-1 at Sporting Kansas City).

By contrast, Vancouver have now recorded 16 regular-season games with three or more goals since the start of last season. The only team to register more such instances is Inter Miami (20), while Vancouver’s 11 such games at home are the most of any team in MLS.

OPTA WIN PROBABILITY

Vancouver Whitecaps – 61.7%

Draw – 20.2%

Colorado Rapids – 18.1%
